Arkansas Little 1000 Canyon

Good Fri 2018 presented a beautiful day to get out and explore some new areas in our wonderful little state. Son Robert was a willing participant, and then off we went.

ARKANSAS LITTLE GRAND CANYON

The ALGC was something that I recently was made enlightened of by Robert. It'southward a rock formation that is below the spillway of the White Oak Lake State Park. But, become on I30 to Gurdon, and take Hwy 53 South. Turn left on Hwy 24 and plough on HWY 332 which lands you lot at the put-in identify for line-fishing on the lake. Go right over the 'dam' or levee if you wish, and you'll find the spillway and the parking spot.

But showtime, nosotros had to pay homage to the International Social club of the Hoo Hoo in Gurdon. The Hoo Hoo are a fraternal organization for the forestry manufacture in this surface area.

Spillway coming from White Oak Lake.

Once nosotros discovered the spillway, then a brusk hike downwardly the creek presented the ALGC formations…..

Travelin' buddy on this trip….

TA takin' it in….

Closer shot of the formation and downstream

A very unique place that many, including locals who grew up near here, had no idea of its beingness.

Now on to the Cossatot River Falls…………nearly a 2 60 minutes trip via Prescott and Delight to go there.

Gentle on our Minds…………

The Spring Wisteria was rampant everywhere…..

We got a little turned effectually, only you tin can't go wrong ending up at Shady Lake, and there was some water coming over.

Shady Lake

COSSATOT FALLS

The Cossatot River ( Cossatot is an Indian name for 'Skull Crusher') winds through the lower Ouachitas and is well known as a Grade Three and Grade Four whitewater stream. When the water is 'right', you'll find a lot of paddlers out there testing their mettle.

For united states of america, nosotros wanted to meet the river with water in information technology a college level than our last trip. We weren't disappointed. The nice thing about this falls is, you can drive to the campground and walk over a couple of bridges to the falls. Depending on how loftier the water is, you might be able to climb rocks a pretty good way down the falls. Or……..have to go upwardly high on the bank and bushwack through the castor. Today, we were able to go a pretty good manner downwards, but not all the way.

View upwardly the river

We saw 3 kayaks coming down, so nosotros watched them traverse the falls. They pulled out down beneath because they had to hike about 3.5 miles dorsum to their army camp to get their vehicle to deport the kayaks out.

You tin can see a red kayak on the right

THE BLUE HOLE

We ran out of time on Friday, but I wanted to finish our quest. And then, the following Tuesday, decided to take a long tiffin and go find the Blue Hole. From Hot Springs, you take HWY 70 to Glenwood, so Hwy viii to Caddo Gap where you have Hwy 240………you'll go maybe eight miles to National Woods road 517……couple of miles on that road to NF 99……you lot'll then see signs and a parking expanse. Some of the roads have a tendency to be washed out in large rains and could exist a little rough. But mostly passable. The best mode is to put the coordinates in Google Maps and it will accept you directly to information technology: 34., -.8042, 3681 WV-93, Caddo Gap, AR 71935. Or just detect the Bluish Pigsty, Caddo Gap in Google Maps and starting time it.

First, the rules and the entrance to the swimming area.

Rules and drive up……..

And here is the first look……….

A cute spot…….

Always good to follow the rules too……….

On the manner out, there are several creek crossings and the Caddo River……hither'due south ane minor creek crossing.

Finally, TA is ever looking for unique things along the road. Simply out of Bonnerdale is this monument to Irwin Bainum, a long time benefactor of Glenwood. This monument is on the family property and can exist seen from highway 70. It's to honor him for starting the Bonnerdale volunteer burn down department.

It's a great time of year to exit and see Arkansas. Promise you enjoyed this Good Friday chance in God's beautiful world. Nosotros are truly blessed in Arkansas with lots to practise…………if nosotros'll just practise it.

Next time…….an Apr trip to the Ozarks with the boys as they are budgeted their coming nuptials. A 'terminal trip with the boys' every bit it were.

Will be headquartering at the Buffalo Outdoor Center and planning on hiking the Smith Creek Preserve…….the Roark Barefaced at Steele Creek, and perchance Hawksbill Crag….weather condition permitting.

Thanks for reading and share with anyone you wish.

Until next fourth dimension…….
